Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc. (LAWO) provides pro bono opportunities for volunteer lawyers to help meet the demand for civil legal assistance. The LAWO Pro Bono Program connects those who cannot afford legal counsel with volunteer attorneys who can help them navigate the legal system and protect their most basic human rights. Attorneys, paralegals, law students, law graduates and other professionals can volunteer as much or as little time as they wish, covering civil legal topics that meet individual interests or abilities. Volunteer opportunities with LAWO include direct representation of clients, pro bono clinics, reduced fee referrals in rural counties, brief advice clinics, pro se legal clinics, technology based LiveChat and Skype appointments, community legal education, co-counseling arrangements, prisoner reentry legal clinics and warrant hearings, and corporate counsel brief advice phone appointments with clients. All volunteers are covered through LAWO’s malpractice insurance and are given support and resources to assist throughout their involvement with a client or project. Attorneys also receive one credit hour of CLE for every six hours of pro bono legal service, up to a maximum of six hours. LAWO and Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE) are partner law firms.
